Markham is thanking his friends in Oregon for their help. He seems to have loved being there and would like to return the proper kindness to them. He like to be remember to his brother and John Hotchkiss. Letter is unsigned.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
